Legislation and Policy Affecting the Education of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children
Program Overview
This course is offered for 1 or 3 credits and provides practitioners with an analysis of laws and policies that affect the education of deaf and hard of hearing children and explore how these laws and policies can be used to improve outcomes for these children.For 3 Credits: The course covers the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, the Elementary and Secondary Education Act/No Child Left Behind Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act, and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.
For 1 Credit: The course covers the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act and the No Child Left Behind Act.
The course outlines the history and requirements of these laws, as well as the ways these laws have been interpreted through court decisions and state, local, and school practices. Students will do a variety of activities designed to increase their knowledge of these federal programs and policies and to use them to solve problems they have identified in their professional setting.
Outcomes
- Increased participants' knowledge of federal programs and policies
- Increased participants' knowledge of federal policy agenda formation process, policy implementation proccedures, and advocacy opportunities
- Analysis of laws and policies that affect the education of deaf and hard of hearing children
- Interpretations of these laws through court decisions and state, local, and school practices
- Using these laws to improve outcomes for deaf and hard of hearing children
- Practical skills for advocacy and resolving issues pertinent to free appropriate public education
- 1 Professional Studies credit for participants who take the 1-credit section
- 3 Professional Studies credits for participants who take the 3-credit section
- Certificate of attendance
